Hey everyone!
If you thought Retsuko was the first office-girl Gachapon darling, you missed out on Fuchiko. So today, let’s take a fun trip down memory lane with a fan-favorite Gachapon (or Gashapon) toy: Cuppu no Fuchiko. If you’re into capsule toys, and looked at all beyond the US, you’ve probably come across this quirky and adorable collectible. Let’s dive into its history and see why it’s captured so many hearts.
Cuppu no Fuchiko made its debut in 2012, brought to life by the creative minds at Kitan Club. This Gachapon series quickly became a sensation thanks to its unique concept and charming execution. Translates literally to 'Fuchiko belongs to the cup', but is usually called 'Fuchiko on the Cup'; and that’s exactly what you get—a tiny figure of Fuchiko, a cute and slightly mischievous character, in various poses as she precariously balances on the edge of a cup.
What makes Cuppu no Fuchiko so special is its playful design. Each figure is carefully crafted to look like Fuchiko is having a little adventure, whether she’s hanging on for dear life or striking a pose. The figures are small but detailed, making them perfect for displaying on your desk or around your home.
The initial series was such a hit that sold 20million toys, it led to rereleases in new colors, numerous follow-ups, co-labs and variations, each with different themes and poses. Fans loved the collectible aspect of the toy, and it became a fun challenge to collect all the different Fuchiko figures. The toy’s popularity also spread outside Japan, making it a beloved item among Gachapon enthusiasts worldwide in the early 2010's.
Cuppu no Fuchiko represents the creativity and whimsy that make Gachapon toys so special. Her starting price of just 200 yen and adorable quirky nature was one of the first toys to push Gachapon worldwide. A big feat for a non-anime-licensed toy! It’s a small piece of joy that adds a bit of fun to everyday life, and it’s a great example of how something simple can become a cherished collectible.
So, next time you’re near a Gachapon machine, keep your eyes peeled for Cuppu no Fuchiko. She still comes out on the rare occasion but can still be hard to find outside Japan. You might just add a bit of quirky charm to your collection!
Happy collecting!
